Emerald is a variety of the mineral family Beryl. Emeralds get their distinct green colour from trace elements of chromium and vanadium. One major factor that gives a Colombian emeralds a colour advantage over their rivals is the formation of iron pyrites in close proximity to the emerald vein which draws away iron elements that are mixed into the emerald formation. Emeralds found in other parts of the world are less intense and brilliant green.
Emeralds has many special qualities, but coloured stone professionals generally agree that emeralds are, most of all, about colour.

An emeralds colour can be broken down into three areas. Hue; is what we call the colour of the stone, with an emerald it is universally green. The colour is then broken down into the type of green, which could include the presence of shades of blue or yellow, like “bluish green” or “yellowish green”. Then Saturation; which describes the intensity of colour. This scientific standpoint is a measurement of the bandwidth of the light returned to your eye from the stone, and plays a large part in determining the grading of an emerald. Tone; is a measurement of the stones lightness or darkness, and is gauged by assessing how much neutral colour of white, grey and black contribute to the overall colour, having the right tone allows the stone to express its saturation and hue to its fullest potential.

Emeralds usually show fissures and fractures throughout the stone, the clarity of a polished emerald is determined by the number, size and location of inclusions which are present in the stone. Emeralds are formed deep in the earth, under specific geologic conditions which reflect its fascinating geological aspects during their growth. These inclusions are often described as looking mossy or garden-like or “jardin,” which is french for garden. Internally and externally too, there may be the presence of fissures, fractures and cavities which affect the stones’ clarity, therefore skilful cutting is needed to bring out the least fractured part of the rough crystal. The transparency refers to the ability of an emerald to transmit light, and is affected by the level of opacity and brilliance present in the emerald.

To optimize the natural rough, emeralds are cut into a variety of shapes such as those illustrated below. The cutting of emerald and other coloured stones is considered as much an art as it is a science. Unlike the perfectly symmetrical cuts prized by the diamond market, coloured stones are usually cut in a more artisanal fashion. The job of the cutter is to cut the stone in a fashion that releases the full potential of the rough material, capturing colour when necessary. The preferred cut is the ‘emerald cut’ which tends to command a premium over all others.

An emerald’s weight is measured in carats. 5 carats = 1 gram. The term carat is derived from the ‘carob seed’ that was used in India as a measure of weight for precious stones. All other criteria being equal, the greater the carat weight, the rarer the emerald and therefore greater its value. Illustrated below is the approximate appearance of a well cut octagon shaped emerald for a given carat weight. It is worth noting that emeralds are less dense than diamonds which means if you place two 1 carat stones side by side, the emerald will generally appear around 30% bigger.

Rough is the natural state of an emerald before the stone is cut, shaped and polished, the best rough emeralds are the flat-topped hexagonal crystals that are often considered to be as beautiful as faceted stones. Some buyers particularly cherish the pieces of rough displaying clean ends on the hexagonal crystal above that of its polished counterpart.
